Swift House Extension Story
"If you can dream it, ETA can build it."
When Triathlon and Swim Coach Melinda set out to re-create her home into a space that would facilitate family life and her successful personal training business, ETA constructions were chosen to do the work.
It was Melinda’s architect Paula Stone of Ellis Architects who recommended ETA and although quotes were sourced from other builders, Melinda felt comfortable selecting ETA because of the detail in the quote that was provided which ensured every element of the build was costed out to give an accurate budget.
‘We knew what we were getting and Ezra was also very personable... we just thought yes, we need someone who can deal with us, council, the architect, trades and everything else that goes with a big unique build like this.’
Melinda said ‘There were lot’s of questions still unanswered as we were going through the build so there were lots of problems to be solved’
The original house was a modest but stylish 1950s retro home with beautiful curves in the front facing brickwork which Melinda loved and wanted to retain. This meant a build where the old and new meld and complement each other and a lot of collaboration between Paula Stone Ellis, ETA constructions and Melinda.
The extension and pool are very contemporary and provide contrast to the original home but inside, the connection between the old and new are seamless and the home flows beautifully.
The original back bedroom and existing patio were removed to make way for the new wing, footings were dug in and then bearers and joists were placed with everything tied together with structural steel.
Using lightweight construction techniques with modern claddings also had cost advantages. The cladding looks smart and is low maintenance but also, large areas can be covered quite quickly resulting in labour savings.
A large cavity slider offers a sound barrier and privacy between the new rumpus room and bedrooms retained in the existing building and the main living space beyond. Entering through that doorway, you are drawn down into a beautiful new kitchen and living area overlooking the new oversized pool. Further along is a large gymnasium and training space while above the new wing, there is a study and sumptuous master bedroom.
‘It’s a house that suits my business, it suits my family and it’s a great location so I imagine I will be here for a very long time to come’ says Melinda with a smile.
I loved how Ezra was very meticulous with the little bits of details. He would bring trades people back if he wasn’t happy - which is just fantastic, we didn’t need to go to him, he would pick out those little things and fix those things himself. Just an absolutely fantastic bloke to deal with and all his trades persons too...I highly recommend him’.
